Stress and resilience are often discussed as separate challenges in the workplace: one to be reduced, the other to be strengthened. Yet neuroscience tells a more integrated story. A brain that remains chronically burdened by stress has fewer resources available for resilience. And resilience itself is not about “pushing through” but about effective recovery.

Chronic stress elevates cortisol, disrupts sleep, impairs memory, and weakens emotional regulation by shrinking or under-activating parts of the prefrontal cortex. Resilience, however, depends on strong connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, the very circuitry stress undermines.
In other words, resilience cannot flourish on a constantly overloaded system. Before asking people to “bounce back”, organisations need to help them unburden their brains.

This aligns closely with stress research showing that gratitude practices, social connection, and pleasant sensory experiences can counteract cortisol by boosting dopamine and serotonin.

4. Environment and routine: Designing for calm and strength

Clutter, constant notifications, and decision overload increase stress, while predictable routines reduce cognitive load. Similarly, resilient people design their environments to cue strength, motivation, and recovery.

5. From destressing to “stretching”: Controlled discomfort
Finally, the two topics meet at the idea of dosage. While chronic stress erodes resilience, controlled, voluntary discomfort can strengthen it. Techniques such as cold exposure, difficult conversations, or stretching comfort zones gradually train the brain to regulate stress responses more effectively.
The key distinction is choice and recovery. Stress imposed without control drains the system; challenge chosen and followed by recovery builds capacity.
