The CIPD is calling on organisations and government to make the right to request flexible working a day-one right.
Flexible working practices in the UK aren’t fair. While COVID-19 has driven an increase in remote working, new research from the CIPD found that 46% of employees in Britain do not have flexible working – whether that be remote working, flexi-time, job shares, compressed hours or part-time working – in their current role.
44% of employees haven’t been able to work from home at all during the pandemic, and those who don’t work flexibly are twice as likely to be dissatisfied with their job and work-life balance. This has often meant those in essential and front-line jobs are not able to work from home, and it’s crucial that these workers are not left behind when it comes to flexible working.
Three quarters (75%) of employees agree that it is important that people who can’t work from home can work flexibly in other ways. We need a new understanding of what flexible working is and we need employers to embrace flexible working arrangements beyond home working, to provide everyone with opportunity and choice.
The benefits of flexible working arrangements are clear, they empower people to have greater control of their working lives. They are good for inclusion and create new opportunities for people who have constraints over how they work. And they are good for people’s wellbeing and productivity.
That is why the CIPD is calling on employers to support flexible working for all and the right to request flexible working from day one of employment. We’re also calling for government to change the law to make flexible working requests a day-one right for all employees.
