Use social media to interact with your staff Social media has fast become a core marketing activity. Whilst many organisations have embraced social media to connect with their current and potential customers, few have realised the potential for engaging with their staff in this way.

1) Communicate across the generations: Baby boomers (those born during the post World War II baby boom, between the years of 1946 and 1964) are currently the largest generation of active workers, closely followed by the millennial generation (born between 1982 and 2000).

2) Baby boomers are not only the largest sector, they are also the most engaged; whilst the millennial workforce has the lowest level of employee engagement. In the coming years, as the millennial numbers increase, HR professionals will need to consider how they engage with their changing workforce.

3) Develop multi-channel communications In today’s connected workplace, most employees will own a mobile phone, a tablet or a laptop and they’ll be used to surfing the net, chatting on social media and catching up on news on the go. It’s commonplace now for people to regularly work from outside of the office and to take advantage of working flexible hours. It’s important to consider the impacts these have on employee engagement and to ensure your communication can reach all people, using all devices, in all places.

4) Measure effectiveness and engagement: Employers are increasingly turning to metrics to understand their engagement levels and the impact they can have on business outcomes. These can be used to set benchmarks to improve against as the foundation for improvement.

5) If you look after your staff, be sure to tell them about it Providing benefits that staff value is a great way to demonstrate the employer cares about them, their families and their welfare.
