National Apprenticeship Week: An interview with Tilly Brogden

For National Apprenticeship Week, we had a quick chat with Year 2 apprentice Tilly Brogden, studying at the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

What’s the trend amongst your friends/peers for post-16 education choices – do you think apprenticeships are becoming more popular?

The majority of my friends want to gain more knowledge when they leave school, going onto either college or sixth form. This usually results in students going to university or permanent employment if they don’t apply for apprenticeships.

Did you explore any other post-16 training options?

First I studied motor vehicles when I left my secondary education. I studied this for two years and gained my level 1 and 2 in vehicle maintenance before morning onto level 3 engineering.

Why was an apprenticeship the right route for you?

The apprenticeship allowed me to gain knowledge whilst learning how to prepare for industry work.

What do you enjoy most about your studies?

The practical work. I enjoy all practical challenges that are put in front of me and I enjoy gaining new skills that enhance my practical ability.

What have you found to be the biggest challenge in your course so far?

My biggest challenge was moving from college to a professional working environment. I was nervous because I had never worked in an engineering workplace before so it was all new for me.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give to someone who’s considering an apprenticeship?

Go into it with an open mind, a positive attitude and always be willing to try new experiences. An apprenticeship enables you to gain several skills you can use in work and in everyday life. It’s worth getting into one as it sets you up for the future.

What are your plans after your apprenticeship?

Once I complete my apprenticeship I hope to find a job that I enjoy – and one that lets me use and expand my skills to secure my career path for my future.
