Sceptics are usually easy to identify


because their scepticism stems from a form of mental comparison – the ‘now’ versus ‘previous experience’. T eir doubt is usually because they’re out of alignment with the organisation. Often they are rather insecure, pre-


Ambassadors, on the other hand, while being aligned with the company and fulfi lled in their role, will be quieter. T ey are reactive by nature, will not actively try to persuade people but rather are exemplars of the culture of the organisation. T ey need to be presented with opportunities to support initiatives. From a leadership perspective, they


need to feel valued by the organisation and have recognition for their work.


Not engaged employees


T ere are four ‘types’ of employees who fall into the not engaged cate- gory. T ey are Challengers, Sceptics, Prisoners and Passengers. T ese four groups form the majority of employ- ees in an organisation, up to 60-65 per cent according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workforce report in 2013. While not actively disengaged,


colleagues, leaders and managers can either positively or negatively infl uence these employees. Even if they say they are, a


Challenger is not aligned to the company. T ey are proactive and can be disruptive, especially as they are not afraid to speak their mind. However, other colleagues might alienate them if their emotional challenges become too aggressive and personal.


CHALLENGER Not Engaged Satisfi ed + Not Aligned - - Challengers, though, can


become engaged if involved in sustained, high quality, two-way communication. Leaders should also understand where their emotion stems

ferring to express their opinions in a secure environment. Leaders will need patience to draw out their views and then provide them with facts to refute their concerns and demonstrable action so that their worries are allayed.


PASSENGER Engaged Dissatisfi ed - - Aligned + Not Reactive


Passengers are reactive by nature


and may only express their views when asked to do so, although again patience may well be required to facilitate this. However, what they say can have value and relevance because they are aligned to the company. Attitudes about themselves may


vary considerably and they have the potential to be good workers although this will vary with mood. T ose with a negative attitude and openly expressed dissatisfaction may alienate their colleagues.


PRISONER Engaged Dissatisfi ed - - Aligned + Not Proactive


Prisoners have the potential to be


disruptive in the workplace as a result of openly expressing their views on work-related matters, although, like Passengers, what they say can often have relevance due to their alignment or understanding of the company’s needs. T ey are inclined to be proactive


but this can change if their overall dissatisfaction provokes a negative attitude, often fuelled by estranging colleagues because of their open chal- lenges. Potentially, they are at greater risk than Challengers and Sceptics of becoming actively disengaged.


Actively disengaged employees


Employee engagement is not static. Many employees can be re-engaged with the right communication but at times this is diffi cult, if not impossible, with Saboteurs and T ieves. Saboteurs and T ieves force their


manager or the company to make a very conscious decision. Do we risk frustrat- ing and demotivating the rest of our employees by managing Saboteurs and T ieves in the same way as everyone else? Or, do we draw attention to them and play into their hands, by trying to isolate them and the damage they can cause?
