emocracy can be frustrating, but democracy is about every individual having a vote and

the result being adhered to. While I’ve long accepted that my voting anything but Conservative in the largely rural, north Cambridgeshire constituency in which I live is a waste of time, I’ve always felt largely untroubled by the return of yet another smiling Tory MP. Writing this leader a day or two

after the result of the EU Referendum, I must admit I am still coming to terms with the fact that we are leaving the

EU – like many of us living or working in the largely affl uent southeast, I fi nd it hard to imagine Britain taking such a radical step as leaving the single market. In our cultured, informed and

largely comfortable middle class circles, we forget that many UK voters are disillusioned with our increasingly polarised Britain where the rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer. T e social and economic diff erences are stark between the southeast and some larger, affl uent cities, like Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford, Brighton and Manchester who voted Remain, and the rest of the country.

T is is has been brought home by conversations with London cabbies, who talk of their second homes in Europe and plans to move abroad because of TfL’s bias towards cyclists and the rise of Uber, who are worlds apart from my local cab drivers whose poverty and powerlessness shows in every friendly, if toothless, smile. We forget that the majority of

the country do not reap the benefi ts of Britain’s economy and many who see this polarisation have been cleverly persuaded that the EU and immigration is the root cause. I attended the MT (Management Today) conference on Referendum Day and among the speakers was Lord Browne of Madingley, son of an Auschwitz survivor who neatly warned him: “When things get tough the majority look to blame a minority”. Following the death of MP Jo Cox, the social media activity of right-wing factions like National Action and Britain First have shown the growing support for these groups. T e real fear now is that Brexit has legitimised racism in the UK and what may lie ahead could be quite terrifying. We all have a duty to model behaviours of moderation, respect, inclusion and equality to those around us during this time of deep uncertainty.
