What research do you use?

Written by Lucy Seham on 26 May 2015

Hi guys,

I'm not sure how many of you focus on of L&D research out there but I wanted to know if there were any specific reports I should be looking at? With such a plethora of companies doing research on L&D practices, how do you gauge which one is relevant?

Hi Lucy

As you say, there are loads of different options out there.  The ones I have found useful are:

  • CEB - always interesting insights and a wide range of content.  Probably been the most engaging
  • Towards Maturity - not so large but a practical focus, and if you join you get to attend 3 business area focused benchmarking groups a year which I find very energising
  • Bersin - a wide range of info, can be a bit US focused

Hope that's some use

Hi Lucy

In addition to those that Chris has mentioned (Towards Maturity was one I would have mentioned as well)  CIPD have a useful L&D annual survey which has recently been published.

Enjoy reading!

Hi there Lucy,

Endorse Blake's recommendation of CIPD's annual L&D Survey - grabbed my copy at the L&D show and read it, also downloaded a pdf from CIPD. Agree with Chris on anything that comes from Towards Maturity - well worth a look.

Beyond those two, it really depends on the area(s) you want to focus on. For example I've been looking at Gen Y again lately and there's heaps from PWC and Bersin Deloitte. Have also refreshed on transfer of learning and CIPD's EBSCO service has been invaluable. For coaching, The Association for Coaching (AC) has great resources.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lucy,

I'd also add to the above - anything published by, or on behalf of, the relevant industry, sector skills council or trade bodies for your sector.

There are some excellent sources of professional research and analysis on industry trends, statistics, changes and developments that as practitioners I consider we should be keeping up with, as well as generic L&D developments.

I hope this helps to add to your pool of resources.

Best wishes

Hi Lucy,

Like many of the others, I echo their sentiments. Towards Maturity happen to be my favourites, their benchmark survey is excellent and gives you a real insight. I'm sure they have a strategic partnership with TJ. In fact, i'm sure their MD (Laura Overton) is doing a series in the magazine at the moment so well worth getting your hands on the last couple of copies if you can.

The CIPD releases a few during the year so keep your eyes peeled for those ones. The one most relevant to us is the annual L&D report which was released at their show a few weeks back. Probably try and get in touch with their Press team to see if you can obtain a copy.Other than that, CMI, BIS, UKCES, Deloitte, PwC amonst others all release some good studies which are relevant to us folk. Not read much from the Learning Performance Instiute - that's my next area to examine.

Hope that helps.
