Webinar will examine benefits of informal learning

Informal rather than formal learning helps people do their jobs, yet most organisations still focus their learning efforts on the classroom and the course.

David Wentworth, Principal Analyst with Brandon Hall Group, and Alessio Artuffo, Chief Operating Officer at the e-learning solutions provider, Docebo NA Inc, will be publicly examining the uses and applications of social and informal learning. They will also be sharing ideas regarding measuring the benefits of these forms of learning.

Alessio Artuffo said: “Modern research is now showing what we’ve suspected for many years – that people learn more through informal channels, on-the-job experiences and coaching about what they need in order to be effective at their job than they do through more formal means. On the other hand, organidations tend to concentrate their efforts on providing formal learning experiences for their workers.

“This suggests that these organisations are missing a number of opportunities to help their people retain more of what they’re learning,” he added. “In addition, they could be helping these workers to discover new knowledge through these other, less formally orchestrated, challenges.”

During the webinar, David and Alessio will explore the 70:20:10 Learning Framework, the use of informal learning to boost learning and will discuss measurement strategies. They will also be outlining examples of companies that are putting these strategies into practice.

“Today’s workers have a diverse spectrum of learning opportunities and experiences from which to choose,” Alessio said. “In particular, the growing accessibility to ‘digital’ learning is changing the way organisations should think about the ‘70:20’ elements of the 70:20:10 learning model.

“This suggests that the key to success in corporate learning today is being able to leverage technology to help workers find and connect with internal experts to foster and enjoy the benefits of informal learning,” he added.
