Training opportunities beat career progression in young people’s employment wish list

Nearly two thirds of UK graduates would choose an employer based on their training scheme rather than their career prospects, according to a World of Learning survey of nearly 800 students across the UK.

The majority of young people agreed with the question – If salary packages were similar, would you select an employer on the basis of its training scheme ahead of its career prospects?

Andrew Gee, Senior Project Manager at World of Learning, comments: “The next generation of employees has spoken: for young people about to enter the workplace, salary aside, it’s learning and development that tops the wish list.

“Businesses need to ensure they have the expertise in place to create a compelling learning and development offering and be mindful that offering a solid training programme plays a major role in attracting young recruits.”

The World of Learning Conference & Exhibition, taking place on 29th and 30th September at Birmingham’s NEC, is the essential event for learning and development professionals. Combining top industry innovators, leading suppliers and the latest in interactive learning technology, this year’s World of Learning will examine, discuss and shape the future of business learning.

Michael Storrier, Senior Consultant at PwC will provide expert insight into graduate learning and development, delivering a session titled: ‘Increasing the retention of your graduates.’

“At PwC we believe that we can attract and retain the best graduates by offering them a fair remuneration package along with a clear learning pathway. The days of organisations offering a ‘job for life’ are gone. Instead, today’s graduates want reassurance that if they join an organisation, they will be given the opportunity to learn new skills, improve their knowledge and develop and grow their expertise in their chosen careers.”

In addition, Margaretha Mazura, Secretary General, European Multimedia Forum (EMF), Clive Shepherd, Consultant, Onligment and Dr Maciej Czarnecki, Wroclaw University of Economics, Corporate Management Department will lead an inspiring keynote ‘Do you have the right skills for 2016 and beyond? Closing the digital learning skills gap.’

Offering a bespoke schedule of seminars, sessions and panel debates, the World of Learning Conference will enable L&D specialists to develop their skills and consult the experts in order to deliver successful training programmes for their current and future workforce.
