So summer is over and the children are back at school. Very soon, the heat and London 2012 and days spent kicking back and relaxing will be just distant memories as normal service is resumed.

To help you get back into a working frame of mind - assuming you were lucky enough this summer to get out of it in the first place! - this month's TJ is full of great articles designed to give you lots of practical information, pointers and advice.

First up, though, is the latest news on this year's TJ Awards. Our director of research, Debbie Carter, reveals the entrants who have made it through to this year's shortlist - our congratulations to them on their success so far and best wishes for the rest of the judging process, which will take place in London over the next few weeks.

You can find out who the shortlisted entries are on pages 12 and 13.

This is the seventh time we have held our annual awards and they are proving more popular than ever - the number of entries has grown by an amazing 50 per cent over the past two years. We also have new categories this year - leadership, sales and operations - and, to judge by the number of people eager to be recognised for their work in these areas, they are aspects of organisational life in which L&D is playing a very important part at the moment. Entries into the apprenticeships and customer service categories are also strong, not surprising given the emphasis on both: this government's skills strategy is very much focused on apprenticeships and organisations that excel in customer service (internal as well as external) will be the ones that emerge from the recession in the best shape.

So thank you to everyone who has entered this year and helped make the TJ Awards such a resounding success.

To those who didn't make it onto the shortlist this year, we hope the decision to enter was the right one: that putting together your entry has been useful for you and has afforded you an opportunity to evaluate your programmes that will bear fruit far beyond the awards themselves. To those who did, we hope you also have derived tangible benefit from the process of entering and wish you the best of luck as the awards progress.

We look forward to seeing you at the awards' dinner at the end of November, at which the winners will be announced. It promises to be a spectacular evening and a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate the vital work that L&D professionals are doing in circumstances that are demanding and challenging, but that also offer immense opportunities to those organisations and practitioners willing to grab them.

 It's going to be a great night and we hope you'll be there to share it with us.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this issue of TJ. Who knows, one of its articles may spark an idea or give you the information you've been looking for that leads to a winning entry in next year's TJ Awards!
