During the last decade, against a background of rapid globalisation and technological advances in telecommunications and networking, remote and virtual working has become a growing feature in the modern-day business landscape for many organisations. Initially received enthusiastically as a means of increasing productivity while reducing costs, remote and virtual working also boasted a multitude of benefits including easy sharing of expert knowledge and a better work/life balance for employees.
However, the reality for many businesses is that the opportunities offered by remote and virtual working are often outweighed by the challenges that it produces. Frequently, this is because they have ignored a fundamental management principle – that remote workers must be fully integrated, appropriately managed and suitably motivated.
