For most non-accountants, accounting and finance remain opaque subjects. They have an enduring reputation for complexity and dullness. As a disheartened executive said to me recently, “Most companies are divided into two camps – finance people and the rest.”

Subjects such as leadership and strategy appear to present a much more accessible and interesting challenge. Mastering balance sheets, profit and loss accounts and cash flow statements are regarded as tasks for only the most seasoned of managers. How misplaced these sentiments are!
