Interviewing masters of the universe can be a fraught affair. So often, you approach the interview optimistically, anticipating a frank exchange of views that will provide searing insights or flashes of razor-sharp wit or even just information that is truly interesting, only to come up against a gigantic wall of banality or a refusal to deviate from the party line.

The times when an interview with the great and the good actually fulfils your expectations are rarer than hen’s teeth. They shine like nuggets of gold nestling among pyrite, and must be treasured as such.
