The government’s target to halve the number of people with poor literacy and numeracy skills by 2010 places more emphasis than ever before on employers and training managers to ensure that employees achieve their full workplace potential by mastering the basics. A number of learning methods are starting to materialise to meet the need for basic skills training, including online courses.
The recent Leitch Review of the UK’s skills requirement reiterates this by stating that in order for us to compete in the worldwide skills market, 95 per cent of working adults must achieve functional literacy and numeracy by 2020. Developing the skills of the existing employee is therefore hugely important given that Leitch revealed that more than 70 per cent of the 2020 workforce is already in the employment market today.
