Poor line managers: they have been found wanting yet again. A recent CIPD learning and development survey1 found that, while line managers are considered vital to the success of L&D, barely half the respondents thought their line managers effectively supported it.
The survey found that only 40 per cent of organisations helped their line managers support L&D. Only 30 per cent included staff development in their managers’ performance objectives. And only six per cent actually rewarded their line managers for developing and improving the skills of their staff.
