BACKGROUND: Amadeo Peter Gianni, banker and financier, was born in San Jose, California, the son of Italian immigrants from Liguria. His father died when he was seven years old and later his mother married Lorenzo Scatena, a teamster. On leaving school at 14, Gianni joined his step-father’s business and by 19 he was a partner in their successful enterprise, which was largely built upon his personal integrity. At the age of 31 he sold his interest in the business to his employees and retired.
