Intuition in decision-making: friend or foe?

Intuition - often referred to as ‘gut feeling’, ‘hunch’ or sometimes ‘business instinct’ - is one of the hallmarks of how human beings think and behave. Strange as it may sound in a world in which we are often exhorted to be cool, calm, collected, and above all rational, recent research in psychology and cognitive neuroscience suggests that, in fact, it’s impossible for human beings to function effectively without using ‘gut feelings’ when making decisions. How can this be so?
