When I used to run workshops on creative thinking, one of my opening gambits was to show an overhead transparency (this was before PowerPoint had been invented) where one second represented one year. The whole idea was to show how, after the creation of the universe, everything had accelerated during the last 30 million years or so after the arrival of monkeys.
