The findings were as follows:

Organisations place more importance on the experience of their IT managers (88%) than on their IT qualifications (41%), although 59% of respondents stated that they would put a high value on more standardised education and qualifications for IT managers.

For the majority of organisations, the head of IT or the equivalent, is the key decision maker when recruiting IT managers.  Sixty-nine per cent of organisations place high importance on IT knowledge, whereas 51% rate management knowledge highly

The majority of respondents (64%) rated the quality of currently available courses for IT managers as moderate or lower.  Private training providers or in-house training are the first choice (79%), 36% use universities or colleges, and 38% use professional bodies such as BCS.  The choice of training provider is based mostly on previous experience of the provider or on their reputation, rather than cost.

Just 31% of organisations use a professional development scheme run by or accredited by a professional body such as BCS for their IT managers.
