Recently I have been busy writing a booklet about Continuing Personal Development. The ‘personal’, as opposed to ‘professional’, is absolutely deliberate. Personal development is about the whole person – knowledge, skills, attitudes, emotions, insights…the lot – whereas professional development focuses on ensuring people are up-to-date with whatever expertise they need to be a competent professional. This is not in any way to disparage traditional CPD. Clearly we all have a vested interest in ensuring professionals are up to scratch (why, I wonder, do brain surgeons and high court judges come so readily to mind?).
