Any consideration of the role of the 21st century trainer must start with the business model – something that has changed and will continue to change rapidly. We are now in a service-led and knowledge-driven economy, operating, as the recent Leitch Report has taken great pains to emphasise, on a global basis. We need to increase the skills-base in our organisations and offer products and services that give our customers greater satisfaction; we must move up the value chain. The role of learning, training and development is to create the circumstances in which employees acquire and apply the knowledge and skills; it is to make the production and delivery of higher-value-added products possible.
