One in four people in the UK is either related to a disabled person or is disabled themselves. Although society is increasingly conscious of discrimination against the disabled, for some their disability has already denied them one of the most important rights of all – the right to an education. However, the growing demand for and proliferation of e-learning is having a huge impact on the lives of these ‘forgotten learners’ – those whose early education either wasn’t completed or in some cases didn’t even really begin. Online learning is challenging the convention not only of where and how it is possible to learn, but also of who is able to learn. For a number of the UK’s disabled, learning online has finally broken down the barriers to learning.
