At 46 years of age, René Carayol is one of Britain’s most sought-after business gurus and is also the epitome of portfolio career man: he is some-time Radio 5 presenter, author of two best-selling business books, non-executive director of the Inland Revenue and one-time MD of IPC Magazines. He also manages to fit in dozens of speaking engagements a year (including at this year’s CIPD in Harrogate) and runs his own superstar consultancy focusing on leadership skills.

Listening to Carayol there is little doubt that he is driven by passion – to change the way we value leadership. After years of managing in Marks & Spencer (he was senior IT manager), Carayol’s talent to lead and show others how to do it, are much in demand. The son of aspirational immigrants, Carayol is keen to take his skills back to his roots. ‘My biggest project work at the moment is working with Barclays Bank Africa where there is a new leadership team in place.’ For the international banking group, Barclays Africa, he says, has never been seen as a commercial powerhouse. ‘But the new leadership team think they can transform the business. They really do believe in themselves.’
