What do you consider to be the most important traits in a leader? And how do the leaders in your organisation measure up to this ideal? These, in essence, were the two questions research and training company IIR recently asked of 665 business managers. The managers were spread across a range of organisations in both the private and public sector in organisations of varying sizes. Their responses provide a fascinating snapshot of the state of business leadership in the early years of the 21st century.

According to the IIR survey, the most important single leadership attribute is the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively. Unsurprisingly perhaps, 93 per cent of respondents rated this as very important. Somewhat depressingly, only 27 per cent found clear and persuasive communication a characteristic of their leaders. This performance gap – 66 per cent – was the largest of any of the items in the survey. ...
