At Ashridge we use a wide range of psychometric instruments during the course of our development activities. These instruments tell many tales and this article explores one such tale. Based on information gathered from one of the most commonly used questionnaires, we will examine and illustrate patterns and messages that identify some of the key challenges for developing organisations and their managers.

Organisational life today is increasingly complex, fast moving and changeable. To succeed in this challenging environment managers and business people must be highly competent in an increasingly wide variety of functions and skills. Many of the psychometric instruments used in development events are designed to help explore our preferences and abilities. These preferences and abilities are often used to help understand why we find certain functions and skills easier and more to our taste than others, and how we respond to this business environment. 1
