Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), originally developed by the Americans John Grinder and Richard Bandler,1 is a method that uses the language of the mind to achieve successful outcomes. It comprises philosophies, methodologies, tools and techniques. Its application has spread to the field of education, sales training, coaching and entertainment. NLP is a contentious subject in our sector – with many learning and development practitioners divided between those who love and those who hate the methodology. To get a feel for the opposing views that abound, take a look at the debate that featured in Training Journal in May and June 2001.2 There is also a substantial group in the middle who take the view that NLP is neither the work of the devil nor manna from heaven but simply a practical and useful skill to add to their training kitbag.
