The unions have had their day. Diminishing influence and falling membership means that, in the UK at least, they are a spent force.
That’s what most people think, anyway.
But one union – the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) – is bucking that downward trend by becoming the fastest-growing teaching union. And it attributes its increasing success, at least in part, to a new leadership and development training programme, which has already greatly improved the services it offers to members by improving the communication and behavioural skills of its managers.
