Starbucks is, whether you love the company or hate it, something of a phenomenon. An almost ubiquitous presence today on the global high street, it seems unfathomable that Starbucks is less than 35 years old, having been formed in 1971 in Seattle. Indeed, even more recently than that, the company was almost unheard of in the UK. We were, after all, a nation of tea-drinkers, weren’t we? Yet Starbucks has employed about 6,000 people in the UK since it opened eight years ago, and operates 460 stores, a total that it continues to increase at a rate of around 50 stores a year. The company has around 9,700 stores in 38 countries worldwide, serving 34 million customers a week.
