Learning and Development News - Latest survey finds e-learning takeup still slow

A new e-learning Census has been completed by training, e-learning & blended solutions provider Viv Cole Associates, the company’s second annual tracking study of e-learning usage amongst the top twelve accountancy firms.

This year’s census, detailing e-learning take up in 2005, revealed that accountancy firms are being left behind as a result of their overly-cautious approach to e-learning adoption. Indeed, the amount of online learning and blended learning used by accountancy businesses seems to be falling.

The companies surveyed reported that e-learning now accounts for an average of only 4.7% of their training budgets, compared to a share of 10.8% for e-learning and 10.6% for blended learning in 2004.

For accountancy firms, the traditional culture of face-to-face training is still the preferred delivery method, with 95 per cent using this type of training. The companies surveyed said that better measurement of return on investment (ROI) was needed, but despite this, the ROI measurement available from face-to-face training was deemed only ‘marginally better’ than with e-learning.

The 2005 survey did show, however, that e-learning was the preferred method of training delivery for technical topics. Viv Cole attributes this to the benefits offered by e-learning, such as being able to learn at your own pace and being able to refer back easily.
