Earlier this year, the popularity of a TV series called Life on Mars was built on the conceit of a modern-day detective being transported back to 1973. The attractions of the series were in equal measure: the pleasure it gave those old enough to remember kipper ties and flares first time around, the sense of nostalgia it elicited in the pre-digital musical era, and the absolute horror it evoked in those forced to acknowledge a time when brown was considered the right colour for everything, from suits and cars to wallpaper and furniture.
