Learning and Development News - Absenteeism crisis week to hit the City in July

This summer’s absentee debate, generated by the nation’s interest in the World Cup, is set to reach its peak over four July days, according to research by ‘future event experts’ Columbia Systems.

According to Columbia, city firms will face their toughest test of divided loyalties in the first week of the month, from the third to the seventh of July. This is thanks to an unfortunate date clash between the summer’s biggest economic indicators and crucial games in the football tournament as well as Wimbledon and Henley.

‘There’s one summer week when a contingency plan is a must. By thinking ahead firms can avoid turning the week into an unnecessary loyalty test. Firms have a chance to identify danger days and work with their people to ensure the best possible staffing solution,’ said Dean Ratcliffe, CEO of Columba Systems.
Columba has addressed the problem by producing what it is calling a, ‘Keep Your Eye One The Ball’ diary for nervous financial firms. The company has identified the following economic events that will clash with World Cup and Wimbledon semi finals: the Tankan Survey, a barometer of Japanese business health from the central Bank of Japan on the third of July, a trading statement from BP on the fifth of July, European and UK Interest Rate Decisions on the fifth of July, and the ‘non-farm payroll’, a major piece of data from the US on the seventh of the month.

‘In four days the market will see five major announcements during potentially the most exciting week of sport seen in this country for years. The potential for market and sporting volatility to conspire and cause firms problems is plain for all to see and needs be managed now,’ added Ratcliffe.
