“U.S. unemployment rate hits 9.4% in May, highest since 1983” is just one of thousands of similar headlines that US newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times ran in June, continuing to challenge one of Americans’ most compelling character traits – their ‘keep smiling’ optimistic attitude.
And while the 345,000 jobs lost in the United States during May represent the fewest since last September, millions of American families – 6m the count so far of total jobs lost in the recession – are suffering economic pain and uncertainty.
