Leaders come into coaching with a variety of objectives, yet a frequent theme is that progress towards a goal seems hard to come by. They are stuck and frustrated and, somewhere in the complexity of the problem, sit other people.
Influencing people who are quite different to you – whether in their communication style, beliefs and values, or ways of thinking and behaving – can be the biggest challenge for any organisational leader. When coaching senior people, in any role, organisation type or sector, I have rarely found anyone who doesn’t have at least one challenging relationship at work.
