Test questions:
• What will help organisations sustain performance through changing times?
• What will be the ‘glue’ that keeps people engaged with the organisation?
• What helps employees experience meaning in their work?
Answer: An invigorating purpose.

This is a hunch that the CIPD has been exploring through its research programme Shaping the Future. Our focus is on what drives sustainable high performance in people-intensive organisations through fast-changing times. We’re pursuing this through action research in a range of case study organisations.

We’re advancing a range of propositions about what could drive performance in these challenging times. They will get tried out in organisations of different sizes, types and sectors. Insights about what works will then be made available to practitioners so that the learning can be shared. We want to close what Pfeffer and Sutton called the “knowing-doing gap”.
