If I had a proverbial penny for every time I’ve heard that question [whether we need different managers for different times] recently, I’d be very rich indeed. The answer, of course, is yes and no!
The ‘yes’ argument is that different types of management are needed for different stages of organisations’ lives. This particularly applies to senior management: what may be required of a CEO in the start-up phase of a business may be different to when an organisation is maturing and needs to formalise its processes.
The ‘no’ argument is that, when it comes to managing through a period of economicm downturn, senior leaders face a more general set of challenges that affect most organisations, whatever their life-cycle stage.
