I have a hobby: I collect ‘morning people’. Let me explain: three mornings a week I walk my son to nursery along the same route.
Each day, we pass the same people going about their daily business – parents taking their children to nursery or school, retired gents out for their morning constitutional and people on their way to work. I like to say a cheery ‘good morning’ to these regulars to see if they will reciprocate. Some make eye contact and respond immediately while others stomp past, eyeing me suspiciously.
Occasionally, one of these people will disappear entirely. I like to think they’ve quit the job that made them miserable and are now selling flip flops in Hawaii. In reality, they’ve probably changed their route to work to avoid that weirdo who keeps talking to them.
