Jane Smith reveals some practitioners’ views on the latest trends in training and learning.

Do you know that ‘swishing’ is a great way to help learners achieve their goals? Are you aware of the power of storytelling to promote learning? Do you appreciate how drawing can help counteract negative attitudes? Can you say how a balloon, a pipe-cleaner and a shell symbolise the benefits of coaching? If you can answer ‘yes’ to these questions, you must have been with me and about forty other training practitioners at the Cotswold Conference Centre for the first TrainerBase conference which was held in April 2005.

So what exactly did presenters and delegates have to say about fashions and new directions in training? The main conclusion of the assembled delegates was that our role has changed radically and irreversibly in recent years. We are, and will increasingly be, less involved in delivering classroom courses and more concerned with supporting people in the real world. Our aims must be to make the best use of expensive resources, to meet individual needs and objectives, to help people become independent learners and to deliver training that is both innovative and fun.

Value for money

An important underlying theme of many of the presentations and discussions was the ever-growing demand from clients for value for money. The issue is not just about cutting expenditure, but also about using existing resources to best effect.
