Both UK government and industry risk losing their competitive edge if the skills gap issue is not properly addressed, according to speakers at the Infobasis 2008 Skills Summit.

Speakers from the public and private sectors at the event, held in London last month, pointed out that the issue can only be tackled effectively if it is confronted firstly through the education system and later on in the workplace.

Reasons for the skill shortage
The higher education sector, the government and employers all came in for criticism from Donald Clark, director of UFI (the government learning initiative body that stemmed from Learndirect) for the way learning is currently delivered.
