Some years ago our family went on holiday in the South of France in early autumn. My wife suggested that I organise a surprise evening out, so I took her to see Nimes play Tolouse at rugby. As you can imagine, she was delighted with this thoughtful treat.

It was the first time that I had seen rugby in France – a long-standing ambition of mine. What I expected to see were numbers of thick-set men in berets, smoking Gitanes and leaning their bicycles against the stands, possibly with bunches of onions on the bikes’ cross bars. What we encountered was a modern stadium with plastic seats and a crowd that could have been in Leicester or Swansea.
