I once ran an identical one-day workshop over the space of three consecutive days. One was in London, one in Manchester and one in Dublin. Each workshop was held in a hotel (as it happens, all in windowless rooms) with the same objectives, timetable and contents. Despite all this sameness, the behaviour of the participants in each place was quite different. In London, they were polite but rather miserable. In Manchester, they were noisier and more cheerful. In Dublin, they were overwhelmingly warm and welcoming.
I attributed the markedly different moods to cultural differences and marvelled yet again at the extent of human diversity – even within a relatively small geographical area.
