Transport operator FirstGroup has appointed JOHN EVANS as its group human resources director. Evans was previously HR director at Strathclyde Police and has also had HR roles at Diageo and British Airways. He said: “My focus is not only to ensure that First continues to attract and retain the best staff in the industry but also to develop the undoubted talent we have in all areas of the Group’s management.”
PAUL HIGGINS is the new sales and marketing director at e-learning provider Course-Source, where he will lead a four-strong sales team and head up the marketing strategy. Course-Source says the position has been created to “grow the business by 30 per cent over the next year, to unify sales activities and to support a young sales team pushing into new areas”.
TIM DREWITT has been appointed director of business and product development at Academy28, a behavioural preferences assessment provider launched earlier this year. Drewitt’s previous roles include director of interactive learning company Balance Learning, head of professional learning services at Xebec McGraw-Hill, and flexible learning integration manager at Lloyds TSB.
Local Authority Building Control (LABC), an umbrella organisation for local authority building control departments, has appointed former East Devon District Council building control manager ANNA THOMPSON as director of its new training arm, LABC Training. LABC Training will provide building control updates and compliance training. Thompson said: “This is an exciting opportunity. LABC already undertakes a lot of training and I will be seeking to complement the best of this as well as develop a whole new range of training content that can be delivered by LABC trainers all around the country.”
Dedicated web hosting company UK Fast has announced the appointment of NATALIE LEWIS as HR manager as the first step in its ‘bold strategy’ to double its 50-strong staff over the coming year. Lewis has been given the task of developing the company’s formal recruitment procedures, and is also responsible for staff development and training.
Leadership development company Dynamic Transitions has appointed CHRISTINE CLACEY as its licensed coach, to help develop its career transition and coaching services. A certified NLP coach, Clacey has a number of years’ experience as a senior manager in corporate IT, specialising in business and professional development.
Remploy has appointed a 25-strong team of recruitment professionals to roll out the government’s Welfare to Work programme across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire. The team, headed by new Pathways to Work district manager SHARON WITH, will work in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, County Training and to help people with health conditions and disabilities get into work.
Six years after winning Alliance Learning’s apprentice of the year award, CLARE GREEN has been made the Bolton-based training company’s new internal account manager. The 23-year-old undertook apprenticeship training with Alliance after leaving school at 16 and went on to join a local paint company. Her responsibilities at Alliance Learning include course sales and client bookings.
JANETTE FAHERTY, CEO of work-focused training and enterprise company Avanta, has been appointed to the board of directors of Prowess, a national network of more than 300 members supporting the growth and development of female-owned businesses. Faherty said: “Self-employment is often the solution for women looking to balance family commitments with a fulfilling career, yet women are under-represented in business ownership in the UK.”
The Institute of Hospitality has announced the appointment of PHILIP STANLEY to the newly created position of general manager for Hospitality Assured – the Institute’s standard for service and business excellence in hospitality. Stanley said: “I am excited to be part of a project that will help businesses focus on their most valued asset – the customer. After all, it is the customer who will have the final say as to whether a company succeeds or fails. My focus will be to raise the profile of, and modify, the standard to ensure that it continues to be relevant not just for today, but for the future.”
Wolters Kluwer UK, which provides HR consultancy services under the Croner brand, has appointed DAVID WELLS to the new post of head of public relations. Wells will lead on all PR activities at the company, aiming to develop its image and reputation among internal and external stakeholders, as well as take responsibility for its communications strategy.
City & Guilds has appointed CHRIS JONES, the former CEO of Harcourt Education International, as its new director-general, replacing Chris Humphries, who now heads up the new Commission for Employment and Skills. Before working at Harcourt, Jones was senior vice-president at LexisNexis Risk Management Group and group director at Financial Times Electronic Publishing.
Certification body NQA has appointed its former environment and health and safety sector business manager, CATHERINE GOLDS, to the newly created post of head of NQA. Golds has worked for NQA for six years, previously holding posts at the Ministry of Defence and the Environment Agency. Her remit is to provide vision and leadership for NQA within the overall group strategy, ensuring global growth and that financial targets are met.
