In a rapidly changing world economy, where the huge workforces of developing countries are prepared to sell their labour for much less than people are in the UK, we no longer have the luxury of competing solely on price.
Instead we must look for other ways of competing, be it innovation, a better customer focus, or research and development as a way of keeping ahead of the competition.
That was the stark warning delivered by the chairman of Cadbury Schweppes plc, Sir John Sunderland, who has been appointed president of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
