Conference to look at key L&D issues

The CIPD’s annual HRD Learning and Development Conference and Exhibition will this year combine a thorough look at some of the key issues in learning and development, leadership, organisational development and talent management, with a focus on the international challenges facing learning and development professionals.

People management and development professionals will gather to hear from leading practitioners and thought leaders between 15-17 April at ExCeL London. The combined programme will reflect the day-to-day and strategic challenges facing learning and development professionals, and will also focus on the specific issues for them associated with the increasingly globalised economy. The conference includes UK and international case studies, interactive workshops and debates.

More than 250 providers of learning, training and development products and services will be taking part in the HRD 2008 Exhibition, which runs alongside the conference, providing a unique opportunity to make new contacts and find practical solutions to workplace issues.

Victoria Winkler, learning, training and development adviser, says: “This year’s HRD Conference and Exhibition and the CIPD-hosted World HR Congress will be a perfect opportunity for people-management and development professionals to share their knowledge, so they are well equipped to deliver for their organisations at a time when belts are being tightened.”

Conference highlights skills to succeed in the public sector

The skills needed by HR practitioners to increase their efficiency while under pressure to keep costs down come under the spotlight at a conference being held this month.

Evolution or Extinction: The future for HR in the public sector? is due to be held in Brighton from 30 April to 2 May.

Organised by the Public Sector People Managers’ Association (PPMA), the conference will look at how cost-saving measures such as shared services, outsourcing and offshoring
will affect HR functions in the public sector.

A selection of experts and case study organisations, both public and private sector, will discuss the practices that will really help improve efficiency and motivate staff.

Speakers are expected to include Greg Dyke, former director general of the BBC; Martin Tiplady, HR director at the Metropolitan Police Service; Geoff Armstrong, director general of the CIPD; Greg Aitken, group head of employee engagement
at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, and Jan Parkinson, managing director of Local Government Employers.

Stephen Moir, PPMA president, said: “HR professionals in the public sector have a huge challenge ahead of them. Not only is the drive for efficiency – providing better services and achieving high performance – paramount, but the public sector continues to be under enormous pressure to cut spending.

“The HR function will need to go through a massive transformation in order to achieve tougher efficiency targets and keep costs down. ”
