Disengaged youngsters will only be helped into sustainable jobs or training when small business owners are given the incentive to see young people as a valuable resource for the future.
Extra capacity also needs to be created so there are real jobs waiting for them when they have completed their education or training, so they know they are learning for a reason.
That was the message from Les Lawrence, chairman of the Local Government Association’s Children and Young People’s Board, to the 80 learning and development, education
and children’s services professionals who attended a briefing on the problems facing young people not in education, employment or training (NEET).
