Careers advice in England could become a ‘postcode lottery’ for users if local authorities are given responsibility for providing it.

That’s the warning from the Skills Commission, which has published the interim findings of its six-month inquiry into the state of English information, advice and guidance (IAG) services.

It says the government must act to maintain the standard and effectiveness of IAG for adults, by establishing a cost-effective national service that is both universal and targeted.

And the training, continuing professional development (CPD) framework and career pathways for those delivering IAG services must be improved to ensure a consistent standard of performance across the country.
