A pledge has been made to increase the number of apprentice car mechanics joining the retail motor industry by 100 per cent over the next five years.

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) says such an increase is necessary to avert a future ‘major skills crisis’ in the sector.

According to research by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the sector will need as many as 120,000 new recruits over the next decade to maintain its competitiveness.

The IMI says 40,000 apprentices by 2012 will ensure the workforce stays sufficiently qualified to handle advancements in car technology, which, in many cases, is already as complex as that found in state-of-the-art fighter planes.
