Happy New Year and welcome to your first edition of TJ for 2008. As the dust settles on 2007, what better
time to look forward to some of the things TJ has planned for the next 12 months and to introduce some new regular features.

TJ has always aimed to provide an independent analysis of the learning and development industry and to report on new developments and initiatives aimed at improving workplace skills. This month, in line with that very objective, we are introducing a new section providing news from your institutes and associations: turn to p17 to read the latest updates from the CIPD, ITOL and BILD.

Our new legal update page will supply regular information on legislation and important decisions from the courts: turn to p60 to read more about a major review of the health and safety laws, government help to employers in handling the problems caused by mental health, and calls to increase the fines faced by companies convicted of corporate manslaughter.

We’ve also got our very own L&D agony aunt, ‘Ask Isobel’; using her broad experience Isobel Rimmer will help you resolve those difficult work-related problems that keep you awake at night.

This month I am pleased to welcome Martyn Sloman, learning, training and development advisor at the CIPD, as a regular columnist. Before joining the CIPD, Martyn was director of management education and training for Ernst and Young and he is a visiting professor at Glasgow Caledonian and Kingston Universities; as a very experienced L&D commentator, we look forward to hearing his views on the industry this year.

The TJ Awards programme for 2008 is now open and, with the closing date of 3rd March just two months away, if you haven’t already considered entering now is the time to start planning your application.

There are 11 awards to be presented at the ceremony on 24th June, so get cracking now; go to the website at www.trainingjournal.com/awards to find out more about the categories and how to apply.

June 24th also marks the third TJ Conference day, which is to be held at the Commonwealth Club in Northumberland Avenue, London, and it promises to be great event for networking and professional development. With a broad array of workshop sessions focusing on best practice case studies and personal development, there is sure to be something of real value for you on the day and the full programme will be available soon. To register your interest in the interim visit TJ Online at www.trainingjournal.com/conference/contact.php

This year TJ joins forces with the Institute of Employment Studies to embark on a major piece of research into the future of workplace learning entitled L&D 2020: shaping change in learning. We aim to look five to ten years ahead to identify the key issues that will drive changes in the need for learning and how it will be delivered, building some potential scenarios and considering ways that the L&D community can respond to the challenges and take advantage of the emerging opportunities.

The desk research is under way and the first workshop will take place early next month – the results should be available in June and there will be regular reports on progress in the magazine and on TJ Online over the coming months.
