Tony Blair’s decade as prime minister was fatally overshadowed by his support for the American invasion of Iraq and President George W Bush’s ‘war on terror’. That one decision effectively rendered any domestic policy success null and void, with one exception: the Northern Ireland peace process.
2A succession of secretaries of state for Northern Ireland worked with the country’s various political parties to bring about a peaceful solution to the sectarian problems it has faced. Prolonged talks between the Unionist and Republican parties culminated in the Belfast Agreement which, earlier this year, facilitated the re-establishment of the Northern Ireland Assembly (NIA).
