Despite the numerous studies into the nature of learning and its various forms, it is still true to say that ‘how we learn’ and ‘why we learn’ are topics that are very poorly understood.

A tiny fraction of our learning occurs in a ‘formal’ setting (such as the classroom or during an online course) and it would be more accurate to say that, in general, learning occurs as an unintended result of these experiences, but precisely what is occurring and why remains something of a mystery.
