Sir Roger Moore and Tony Curtis once played the roles of Lord Brett Sinclair and Danny Wilde. They were The Persuaders: two crime-fighting adventurers who weren’t afraid to run the gauntlet when the going got tough. But although they often used charm, wit and the occasional round of fisticuffs to put the ungodly behind bars, rarely did they negotiate to achieve their ends.

In the real world, if you know what you want but recognise that a certain amount of bargaining will be necessary for you to get it, you will need to be a ‘persuader’ of a different kind – one who knows that, where there are relationships, there will be a calling to step up to the negotiating table.
